Digital Negative (DNG) is an open raw image format introduced by Adobe for use in digital photography. DNG intends to serve as an improved alternative to raw file formats, which has been popular with photographers and creative professionals greater creative control.

DNG is an archival format for the raw images generated by digital cameras for better digital image preservation. It’s based on the TIFF/EP standard format, and mandates significant use of metadata, including version control scheme. Unlike RAW, DNG can be rendered and opened without requiring additional information of the characteristics of the camera as it’s a self-contained file format, allowing a more efficient workflow when handling raw files from multiple camera models and manufacturers.
The DNG file format is hardly popular yet, and is not supported by default in Windows 7, unlike Mac OS X which has native support for DNG image format. Most Adobe Creative Suite products have also support DNG format. In order to view DNG directly in Windows 7 with Windows Explorer as thumbnail preview and open DNG in Windows Photo Gallery, a DNG codec is required.
Adobe has published a DNG Codec release candidate on Adobe Labs. The DNG Codec provides a method for Windows 7 customers to view DNG files in the Windows Explorer and Photo Gallery. The codec allows thumbnail of DNG images been generated for preview in Windows Explorer.
The Adobe DNG Codec supports only both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) Windows 7, but is not compatible with Windows Vista
